CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – A driver is facing several charges after Coral Springs police said he sped away from an officer who tried to pull him over Sunday and crashed into a vehicle carrying a 6-year-old girl, killing her.

The crash happened just after 5 p.m. at the intersection of West Sample Road and Northwest 85th Avenue.

According to an arrest report, an officer had been trying to stop a 2023 Mercedes-Benz driven by Chevon Dalton Graham, 26, of Sunrise, for having “extremely dark tint” while driving along Sample Road.

Police said Graham, who had two passengers with him, accelerated to flee police; the officer then turned his lights and siren off, but the suspect continued speeding away.

He then slammed into a 2018 Chevrolet Traverse, police said.

That SUV had a 6-year-old girl secured in a car seat inside. The arrest report states that the force of the crash split the Chevrolet in half and ejected the girl and the car seat.

Police said the girl, who hasn’t been publicly identified, was airlifted to Broward Health Medical Center, where she later died. The driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Graham came out of the crash with a broken nose and serious legal trouble, according to police.

Officers arrested him Monday on charges of vehicular homicide, aggravated fleeing and eluding causing death, reckless driving causing serious bodily injury, reckless driving property damage and suspended driver’s license with knowledge.

Graham was being held in the North Broward Bureau jail facility on a $226,000 bond.

A judge ordered him to surrender his passport and submit to electronic monitoring if he bonds out, according to jail records.

Broward court records show that Graham, leading up to Sunday’s crash, has been pulled over in the county three times since 2021.

In the most recent case, on Jan. 24, a Plantation police officer cited Graham for driving 54 mph in a 45 mph zone along Sunrise Boulevard.
