DeSantis directs Florida Highway Patrol to help enforce immigration laws

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Friday that he directed Florida Highway Patrol troopers to help enforce U.S. immigration law.

DeSantis said he was proud Florida was one of the first states in the nation to “enter into an agreement” with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

“FHP state law enforcement officers will be empowered to arrest and detain aliens attempting to unlawfully enter the United States,” DeSantis said.

DeSantis’s directive also allows FHP troopers to investigate suspects and report their findings to federal agents who can make decisions about deportations.

DeSantis said U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement will be selecting and training the FHP troopers.
