FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A 65-year-old man appeared in court Tuesday after deputies said his revenge in Broward County scared a family and was dangerous and costly.

Broward County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Edward Mazzone on Monday and booked him at the county’s main jail in Fort Lauderdale.

According to a March 17 arrest warrant, Mazzone was allegedly angry at his employer for firing him and not paying him for overtime.

According to a deputy’s arrest report, Mazzone called 911 and impersonated a Lauderdale By The Sea resident to say, he had “lost his mind due to financial problems and he had shot and killed his wife, mother, and dog with a shotgun.”

Prosecutors filed a third-degree felony case against him on March 10 after detectives identified him as the caller in the swatting incident at 6 p.m., on March 20, 2024.

Deputies reported Mazzone made the 911 call from Jacksonville and his lies prompted a county response and confusion that caused “the wife and elderly mother ... a panic attack” near South Ocean Boulevard.

“Mazzone had intentionally and maliciously caused this madness to disrupt the lives of [his employer’s] family,” a BSO deputy wrote his report.

At least eight deputies from two districts and four paramedics responded to the 911 call, according to deputies.

Mazzone faced a charge of misusing the 911 system. His bond was $2,500. Broward County Circuit Judge Barbara Duffy is set to preside over the case.
