TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The Florida Legislature passed the bill dubbed Lucy’s Law late Friday night.
It passed in the state Senate with a vote of 31 to 0, while it passed in the House with a vote of 93 to 1.
The bill is in response to boat pilot George Pino being charged initially with only minor misdemeanors in a crash that took the life of a 17-year-old Miami girl named Lucy Fernandez and left two others seriously injured.
Fernandez died on September 5, 2022, a day after the crash.
The bill heads to the desk of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is expected to sign it into law.
