Broward judge rules against Oasis Living Quarters, accused of illegally evicting vulnerable seniors

Judge rules to dissolve order to stop evictions instead of vacating it as Oasis Living Quarters wanted

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A civil court judge on Monday sided with a grieving attorney who raised awareness about vulnerable seniors’ evictions during the Oasis Living Quarters conversion into Waterview Rental in Fort Lauderdale.

Broward County Circuit Judge William W. Haury, Jr. ordered the evictions to stop on April 2. The attorneys representing Oasis Living Quarters wanted him to vacate the order.

“It’s to try and make it so that it never happened, which is something that we will not allow,” Attorney David Comras said at the courthouse.

Comras claims there were law violations during the evictions without written notice and in less than 45 days. The attorneys representing Oasis Living Quarters disputed the claims and presented a Jan. 30 written notice and employees’ testimony in court to the contrary.

“Even now as we sit here today I have not met a single resident who has ever claimed to have received that document,” Comras said.

Comras’s aunt Rema Comras is the plaintiff in the civil lawsuit filed on March 19. She moved to Oasis Living Quarters after her husband died in 2021.

The attorney said his aunt was stressed after a “mandatory” meeting to announce evictions impacting the assisted living facility residents descended into chaos on March 5.

Rema Comras moved out of Oasis Living Quarters after the announcement, and she died at 88 on April 21.

During a hearing on Monday, Haury announced that since the plaintiff in the civil lawsuit was dead he had decided to dissolve the order.

Haury did not vacate it. It was a victory for David Comras, the Fort Lauderdale-based attorney who has been grieving his aunt.
