Jose Glen Rodriguez Vazquez, 33, pleaded guilty to one count of offenses against students by authority figures, a felony punishable by up to 15 years in state prison.
In exchange for his plea, prosecutors agreed to drop a second count originally filed against him.
Rodriguez Vazquez was sentenced to 364 days in county jail, followed by two years of community control with no early termination and 10 years of reporting probation.
A judge also ruled that he will not be required to register as a sex offender, but he must complete a mentally disordered sex offender treatment program.
Rodriguez Vazquez was arrested Dec. 1, 2023, following an investigation into what authorities described as “suspicious activity” involving a female student at Doctors Charter School in Miami Shores, where he worked.
Surveillance video reviewed by police showed the student skipping class on several occasions between Oct. 31 and Nov. 14 of that year to visit Rodriguez Vazquez’s office.
In one video, police said he was seen staring at the student’s buttocks as she placed a cup on a table while wearing a short skirt. They also confirmed that another video showed the two stepping into a corner just outside his classroom before reentering.
Police said the student wasn’t enrolled in any of his classes and had no reason to be in his office during instructional time.
When interviewed by detectives in the presence of her parents, the student admitted to engaging in multiple sexual conversations with Rodriguez Vazquez, including a moment when he allegedly told her, “I wish I could kiss you right now.”
Investigators also reviewed her phone, which showed numerous incoming and outgoing calls with Rodriguez Vazquez.
School officials said Rodriguez Vazquez was terminated following the investigation.
Among other conditions, Rodriguez Vasquez must forfeit his teaching credentials, and is not allowed in be near any children unsupervised unless they are his own.
The victim also filed a lawsuit against the Miami-Dade County School Board, the charter school and Rodriguez Vasquez. That lawsuit is still pending.
Rodriguez Vazquez’s defense attorney, Frank Quintero, says he believed the sentence is fair, and a judge warned Rodriguez Vasquez of the what’s at stake if he violates his probation.
“If you do anything that prompts the state of Florida to file an affidavit against you, and they prove that you violated your probation, you’re facing up to 15 years in state prison,” said Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Christine Hernandez.
He is expected to begin serving his jail sentence immediately.
