HIALEAH, Fla. – A judge ordered that a 55-year-old man be held without bond on a first-degree murder charge Wednesday after police accused him of shooting and killing a man visiting a neighbor’s unit at his Hialeah apartment complex the day prior.
Family members of victim Yoendris Campos, 33, believe he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The shooting happened just after 3 p.m. Tuesday at an apartment building at 710 E. Ninth St.
An arrest report states that surveillance video showed suspect Pedro Blanco knocking on the door of apartment 202 with his right hand inside a plastic bag.
Investigators said he walked back to his apartment, 201, after no one answered.
Police said when Campos eventually opened the door, Blanco returned, “raised his right arm with the bag and fired a single gunshot,” killing Campos.
Family members said Campos leaves behind a young daughter and that Blanco “has to pay.”
Executive Officer Jose Torres, a spokesperson for the Hialeah Police Department, described the shooting as a “dispute between neighbors.”
The arrest report doesn’t give an exact motive for the shooting, nor does it state whether Campos was the intended target.
Authorities said they found the murder weapon in Blanco’s apartment and a spent shell casing “inside of the kitchen garbage bin.”
As of Wednesday afternoon, Blanco, a Cuban national, was being held in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
