Miami serial burglar arrested after continually stealing from vending machines, cops say

MIAMI – Miami police arrested a man on a litany of charges Tuesday after they said he was responsible for a string of burglaries on college campuses in which he pried open vending machines and stole money.

David Sharon, 66, is accused of targeting at least four higher education institutions in Miami: Lindsey Hopkins Technical College at 750 NW 20th St., Miami Dade College’s Medical and Wolfson campuses at 950 NW 20th St. and 500 NE Second Ave., respectively, and Atlantis University at 1011 Sunnybrook Road.

“In every case, the defendant uses an unidentified tool to pry open the machines, leaving significant damage to the vending machines and stealing cash from inside the machine,” an arrest report states. “The combination of consistent clothing, identical methods, location and the proximity of timelines links the defendant and each of these burglaries.”

Sharon has been arrested eight times in the past for similar burglaries, according to the report.

According to the Miami Police Department, a patrol officer spotted a man matching Sharon’s description at Northwest Seventh Court and 11th Street in the city’s Overtown neighborhood and took him into custody just after 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Jail records show he faces several burglary, theft and criminal mischief charges, as well as charges for trespassing on school grounds.

Sharon, who is homeless, was being held in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctioanl Center with a bond listed as “to be set” Wednesday afternoon.
