The Iota Pi Lambda and Beta Beta Lambda chapters hosted the service event at The Green Haven Project, 1160 NW 2nd Ave, Miami. The Green Haven Project is a community garden created to combat the epidemic of urban food deserts found in low-income communities. Green Haven also focuses on educating youth on horticulture and nutrition. The Jewel founders and early leaders of the fraternity succeeded in laying a firm foundation for Alpha Phi Alpha’s principles of scholarship, fellowship, good character, and the uplifting of humanity.

Tau Rho organizes sanitation drive for homeless women
Gema VilchezEarlier this month, members of the Tau Rho Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority delivered more than 250 bags of donated personal care items to homeless women in the Camillus House homeless shelter in Overtown. The sorority collected more than 1,000 items – from sanitation pads and panty liners to toothbrushes and socks, said Reina Mitchom, vice president of the Tau Rho Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. While volunteering on campus to make sandwiches and snack bags during the summer, the Tau Rho Chapter got inspired to collect personal care items after talking with homeless women about their needs. “The main point of the drive was to maximize the impact we could have on those homeless women locally, and we definitely exceeded the expectation we set for ourselves,” said Mitchom. Tau Rho plans to do another drive once Covid-19 restrictions are lifted.

Man found shot outside Overtown Market
MIAMI – A man was found with a gunshot wound Thursday morning after collapsing outside a store in Miami’s Overtown neighborhood. Miami police Officer Mike Vega said the man was found unconscious outside the Overtown Market at the corner of Northwest 12th Street and Northwest First Place shortly before 5 a.m.“We believe that he was most likely shot somewhere else and walked or ran here,” Vega said. Woman shot while sleeping in Overtown apartment
MIAMI - A woman is recovering in a hospital after she was shot in the arm while sleeping. The shooting happened in Miami's Overtown neighborhood early Saturday morning.
