North Carolina scored 40 points in the paint but could not overcome its shooting woes from behind the arc. Tahan secured the fourth point for Miami with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Passola Folch. The Hurricanes ultimately defeated Cal, 5-2, and head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews achieved a milestone of 400 wins in her 22 years in Coral Gables.

The Miami Hurricanes golf team returned to tournament action for the first time this spring at the University of Central Florida (UCF) Challenge in Orlando, Fla. As a team, the Hurricanes shot 32-over par over the course of three days. This was an unexpected result after performing well at the UCF Challenge in 2022, where they finished in eighth place at 10-under par. Although fourth-year juniors Franziska Sliper and Daniella Barrett had poor finishes, they also each shot a round of even par. The Miami Hurricanes were able to take down a tough Georgia Tech team thanks to a dominant rebounding performance and late-game execution. In this Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) showdown, the ‘Canes outlasted the Yellow Jackets, 64-58, on Sunday afternoon at the Watsco Center. The ‘Canes outrebounded their opponent, 51-25, grabbing more than twice as many rebounds as Georgia Tech (12-11, 3-9 ACC). A back-and-forth battle continued in the third quarter while Cameron Swartz led the way for the Yellow Jackets. After Georgia Tech cut the lead down to two with under a minute remaining, Meier called a timeout to regroup the squad.

Miami women’s basketball completed a comeback and staved off a comeback from the Clemson Tigers to capture a thrilling overtime victory, 69-66, at Littlejohn Coliseum in Clemson, S.C. A chaotic series with multiple misses from Clemson led to overtime, and veteran forward Lola Pendande was the overtime hero for the ‘Canes as she hit the go-ahead layup and the game-icing free throw. “In February, any win is huge, but a road win in February against a very high-quality opponent is massive,” Meier said. “Clemson played a heck of a fourth quarter and overtime was anyone’s game.”Fresno State transfer Haley Cavinder pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. With this win, the Miami Hurricanes move to 7-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and 14-8 overall.

Tahan finished next, as she won, 6-3, 6-3, to put the ‘Canes a victory away from winning entirely. The Cyclones proved too strong, as Achong was defeated 6-2, 4-6, 5-7 to give Iowa State a 4-3 victory in the ITA Kick-off Weekend. The match is set to take place at noon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.

Fifth-year senior forward Destiny Harden was the standout performer for Miami. “It was a really special and inspirational performance [from Harden],” Miami head coach Katie Meier said. The Hurricanes got off to a strong start in doubles as fifth-year senior Daevenia Achong and fourth-year junior Maya Tahan flew to a 6-3 win on Court 1. Miami clinched the match minutes later as Boch-Collins dashed to a 6-0, 6-1 win on Court 4. Needing only one more point to win the match, FAU’s Matthews did the impossible and saved six consecutive match points.

In its first two ACC games, Miami trounced Louisville by 27 points and beat the NC State Wolfpack, 80-73. Before facing off against Georgia Tech, the Hurricanes downed Notre Dame by 11 on the road. In that game, Wong dropped a team-high 24 points with six rebounds and five assists.
