Redshirt senior Danika Huizinga, junior Aino Otava and sophomore Emma Sundstrand competed for the Hurricanes in Athens, Georgia. “All three women are walking away with a weekend to be proud of,” Miami head swimming coach Andy Kershaw said. “Danika not only set the Miami record but improved her entry time into the NCAA Championships. The Hurricanes will strive to be represented well during the NCAA Championships in Atlanta, which run from March 16–19.

Although Miami had the lead, Virginia Tech had shot 61% from the field, compared to Miami, who shot 48% in the game’s opening period. Virginia Tech, however, still put up a fight.

The Hurricanes finished last out of 15 teams and finished 61 shots behind first-place Florida State. Despite finishing with a final-round 78 (6-over), Backman shot her ninth and 10th round of par or better on the season during the first two rounds. Backman shot an even-par 72 on Sunday and followed that up with a 1-under-par 71 on Monday.

Sophomore diver Max Flory took home a bronze medal, finishing behind Cooper and bringing the Canes to seven medals in four days. “It ended a great with the 400-medley relay record, which we had set earlier in the year,” Kershaw said. “To re-break [the record] it was great.”The medley relay was not the only record UM broke, as the 400-yard freestyle relay team set a school record with a 3:18.28 time. The team was made up of San Nicolas, freshman Jacey Hinton, redshirt sophomore Adrianna Cera, and senior Sydney Knapp. The weekend ended on a high note for the Canes, as Flory was named the ACC Championships Men’s Diving MVP.

Entering the 2022 season, Miami Hurricanes head coach Gino DiMare preached that his team’s pitching staff was going to be the anchor of this year’s squad. If the first series is any indication for the remainder of the season, DiMare will be able to rely on both hitting and pitching to guide the Canes to Omaha for the first time since 2016. He went five innings allowing one unearned run while allowing just two hits and setting a career high with six strikeouts. “It’s a huge confidence booster and a great way to start my career here at Miami,” Carrier said. The Hurricanes secured a four-game sweep to open the season, their third Opening Weekend sweep in four years.

After months of anticipation, the Miami Hurricanes will finally take the field as they kick off a four-game series at home against Towson on Friday night at 7 p.m. Miami will play in its first non-intersquad contest since being eliminated in the regional round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament. Since last season, the Hurricanes have seen a notable roster shift and against Towson, they will get a chance to show off the newest members of the young team. Last season, Miami finished fourth in the Atlantic Coast Conference in team ERA at 4.4, allowing only 158 walks and held opponents to a batting average of .245. Towson fields 41 players on the roster, and many of those players have college playing experience as there are only eight freshmen. Last season, however, the team from Maryland was not as competitive as many others, finishing with a record of 21-36.

Miami started off hot on the road against Virginia on Tuesday, going up 20-3 at the end of the first quarter which led to a 16-point victory. The Hurricanes rode their hot three-point shooting, finishing the game at 47.6% from downtown after shooting 52.9% in the win over Florida State. “We have a lot of road wins this year in the ACC and they count more, they really do,” Miami coach Katie Meier said. Miami will be on the road in Atlanta on Sunday to take on No. 16 Georgia Tech, a team the Canes upset at home towards the end of January.

Byrne shot under par all three days and shot two consecutive rounds of 71 on Sunday and Monday. Byrne’s three-day total of 211 was good enough for a t-19th finish out of 99 players in the field. Fourth-year junior Anna Backman was the only other Hurricane to finish under par with a three-day total of 3-under par. Like Byrne, Backman fired rounds of even par or better during all three rounds. After opening with an even par, 72, on Sunday, Backman shot 70 and 71 over the final two days to finish at 3-under.

[North Carolina is] a very, very talented team.”The Tar Heels are coming off a 19-point win against Wake Forest and were led by Alyssa Ustby’s 18 points and 10 rebounds. The goal for UM is to get to the NCAA Tournament in March, but the team plays some tough games moving forward, starting with North Carolina.

The Canes also outrebounded Syracuse 53-36, which is something that Meier has harped on throughout the season. Syracuse (9-11, 2-8 ACC) entered the contest with a record that did not tell the entire story, as they proved to be a formidable opponent for the Hurricanes. The Orange had four scorers in double-figures, with redshirt sophomore guard Tiesha Hyman and graduate guard Naje Murray both scoring 15 points to lead Syracuse’s attack.

The day started with a commitment from offensive tackle Anez Cooper. The next player to commit to Miami on National Signing Day was TreVonte’ Citizen, a four-star running back from Lake Charles, Louisiana. “[Moten is a] 3-technique [defensive lineman], can’t find enough of those, [he is] 6-foot-3 [and] 322 pounds,” Cristobal said.

Syracuse is coming off a win against Pittsburgh, its second conference win of the season. In Tuesday’s contest, the Hurricanes held a fourth quarter lead, but Louisville stormed back late to take them down. Syracuse remains a potent offense this year despite their poor record, averaging 74.2 points per contest, but lacks collective rebounding like Miami.

Miami Hurricanes bullpen ace Carson Palmquist was named a unanimous Preseason All-American on Tuesday evening to become the third Cane in the last 13 years to receive the honor, the team announced. After playing in just eight games in the previous campaign, Palmquist shouldered a full workload and ended the season leading the Hurricanes and the Atlantic Coast Conference in saves with 14. The Fort Myers, Florida, native received various honors for his performance last season, being named a first-team All-American by NCWBA and Perfect Game. Palmquist has also been named a Preseason First-Team member by Baseball America. Now entering his third season in Coral Gables, Palmquist is expected to be a staple in the Hurricanes’ bullpen and one of their most important players, regardless of position.
