SUNRISE, Fla. — Miami Hurricanes running back Jordan Lyle was driving a BMW that a Sunrise police officer said reached speeds of at least 130 mph while fleeing a traffic stop on the Sawgrass Expressway last month, according to an arrest warrant obtained by Local 10 News on Tuesday.

Jail records show Lyle, 20, was arrested Thursday on charges of fleeing and eluding at a high speed and reckless driving. He was released the same day after posting a $55,000 bond, according to the Broward State Attorney’s Office.

The incident happened on July 10 on the northbound Sawgrass Expressway in Broward County just north of Sunrise Boulevard in Sunrise, according to the warrant.

A responding officer said he was conducting “traffic enforcement” shortly after 7 p.m. when he saw a gray BMW X5 M-Series rapidly approaching from behind.

The officer first clocked Lyle traveling 92 mph in a posted 65-mph zone, according to the warrant.

The officer said he activated his emergency lights and siren to stop the BMW, but the driver “failed to yield and rapidly accelerated away,” the warrant states.

According to the warrant, the BMW’s speed “increased to approximately 130 mph or greater while traveling through significant Friday evening traffic.”

Police said Lyle repeatedly followed other vehicles at extremely short distances, made “rapid, abrupt, and unsafe lane changes” and weaved between occupied lanes of traffic.

As the BMW approached West Oakland Park Boulevard, Lyle exited the travel lanes and used the outside shoulder to pass other motorists before swerving back into traffic, the warrant states.

The officer then stopped his attempt to catch the BMW because of its extreme speed, traffic and the danger posed to other motorists, according to the warrant.

The officer said he continued watching the BMW from a safe distance and later saw it exit the Sawgrass Expressway onto eastbound West Commercial Boulevard.

At the intersection of West Commercial Boulevard and Hiatus Road, Lyle made a wide U-turn from a through lane and continued westbound, despite red left-turn arrows controlling the designated left-turn lanes, according to the warrant.

Lyle then entered the southbound Sawgrass Expressway and again accelerated to a high rate of speed before the officer lost sight of him, the warrant states.

Police said they also reviewed license plate reader information that showed the Lyle traveling eastbound on Royal Palm Boulevard at Weston Road at about 7:03 p.m., roughly four minutes before the officer first encountered it on the Sawgrass Expressway.

Investigators later reviewed surveillance video near Lyle’s home in Sunrise, according to the warrant.

A neighbor’s Ring camera showed the BMW was not in Lyle’s driveway at about 6:46 p.m. but was backed into the driveway approximately one hour later, the warrant states.

Investigators said they obtained a search warrant for surveillance recordings from Lyle’s home.

The warrant states the combined surveillance evidence established that the BMW was not at his home at about 7:18 p.m. but arrived at approximately 7:34 p.m., with Lyle driving.

A University of Miami spokesperson previously told Local 10 News in an email, “We are aware of an incident involving student-athlete Jordan Lyle. As due legal process runs its course, we will have no further comment at this time.”

Lyle, a Fort Lauderdale native, started at running back in Miami’s 2025 season opener against Notre Dame but suffered a leg injury that sidelined him for most of the season.

He played in six games, carrying the ball 35 times for 108 yards and scoring one touchdown against Stanford.
