Crews prep for Interstate 395 demolition with noisy excavators in downtown Miami

MIAMI – Detour signs were going up to keep drivers away from the demolition of Interstate 395, which runs east to west in Miami.

Oscar Gonzalez, a spokesman for the $840 million I-395/SR 836/I-95 Project, warned the demolition will cause dust and noise.

Gonzalez said the contractor has excavators with special attachments to “crunch the concrete and process it.”

The deck, steel beams, columns, piers, and foundations will all be destroyed from Northeast First Avenue to Northwest Third Avenue, according to Gonzalez.

This will make way for the construction of a modern and high-capacity double-deck highway to connect downtown with South Beach, according to Gonzalez.

The project, a partnership between the Florida Department of Transportation and the Greater Miami Expressway Agency, is set to be completed in 2027.
