The reigning state champion Somerset Academy marching band marched down Constitution Avenue on the Fourth of July, performing in front of thousands and passing iconic landmarks like the White House and the Washington Monument.

It marked the second time Somerset Academy had been invited to perform in the national parade — an honor band members said they don’t take for granted.

“That it’s rare, that it is an acknowledgement of their performance all year, them being recognized for their achievements is something that they’re going to remember for the rest of their lives,” said Ed Miller, assistant principal of Somerset Academy.

“We represented Somerset with a lot, a lot of pride,” said Tatiana Rodriguez, the school’s band director. “It was magical when we turned the corner of Constitution, tears, everything in the world. It was just a fulfillment.”

South Plantation High School’s marching band also took part in the festivities, proudly representing the state of Florida.
