On Tuesday, a jury in Miami-Dade County awarded former Florida state senator Daphne Campbell a $100 million verdict for the wrongful death of her son, Jason Campbell.
He was shot and killed while he was sleeping in 2021 by Lakoria Washington, who illegally entered the Monte Carlo Condominium complex in Biscayne Gardens before the fatal shooting occurred, authorities said.
In the wake of the shooting, Campbell filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Monte Carlo Condominium Association, the property management company, Akam & Associates LLC, and the security service contractor for the building, EMS Protective Group.
According to a press release from Campbellās attorneys, the jury found Akam & Associates 57% at fault, Monte Carlo 18% at fault, EMS 18% at fault and the tenant of the condo 7% at fault.
āWhen a senseless tragedy strikes your life, you feel helpless, alone and completely shattered,ā said Daphne and Hubert Campbell in the press release. āLosing our beloved son Jason has caused us unspeakable pain that we would not wish on anyone. This verdict will never bring our son back, but we hope it sends a strong message to all property managers and owners and compels them to provide adequate security before another family suffers like ours has. Thank you to our friends, community, and Morgan & Morgan for supporting us during this nightmare. Please continue to pray for our family, including Jasonās three children who must now grow up without their father.ā
