The victim, Carlos Delahoz-Vega, 38, was working as a landscaper at the time, and now his co-workers and family members are demanding justice.

Just off South Dixie Highway in Cutler Bay, family members and friends came to remember Delahoz-Vega, who was hit and killed by a car while working there on Thursday.

“It hurts a lot because he is my life, my love, my everything. But it’s God’s will and I have to accept it,” his mother, Zanie Vega, said.

Delahoz-Vega was a father to two young girls, Mia and Gia.

His family says he was wearing a reflective vest when the crash happened and they’re still waiting to learn if charges will be filed.

“The person who hit Carlos is at home sleeping in his own bed with his family, yet my parents are missing a child,” his sister said.

Delahoz-Vega’s sister, Aleana Morales, traveled home from Georgia to help make funeral arrangements -- now faced with a reality she’s still trying to process.

“It’s like, what are the girls going to do now?” she said.

Sunday night’s vigil was a moment to pause, to grieve and to lean on prayer.

“I’m proud of the life and 38 years that God gave me to be with my son,” Zanie Vega said.

His family says Delahoz-Vega was someone who always looked out for the people around him, and right now, they’re trying to do the same for each other.

“I would tell him I love him,” Morales said. “That everything is going to be OK.”

A GoFundMe page has been created to help with the victim’s funeral expenses.
