South Florida sneaker buff robbed of expensive kicks after leaving convention

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — A South Florida man went to a sneaker swap over the weekend, but hours later was the victim of a “sole”-crushing crime after thieves broke into his car and took off with thousands of dollars’ worth of shoes.

They included Jordan 1s, Dunk Lows and other popular kicks, all now gone after sneaker seller David Jacobo says a person seen on surveillance video in a white van pilfered his parked car.

The thief got away with more than $7,000 in shoes.

“I was just like, ‘Am I getting pranked?’” Jacobo said. “I just don’t know what’s happening.”

It happened Sunday, after sneaker heads showed out for the Sneaker Swap 365 in Hialeah, buying, selling, and trading the hottest footwear.

“We always go to the event, always no problem,” said Jacobo. “There’s always security.”

But when he the convention, that’s when trouble started.

“I’m not sure if they followed me or if there were just these crooks looking into cars,” he said.

Jacobo said he parked his black Nissan in the 2800 block of Ponce de Leon Boulevard in Coral Gables for a bite to eat, with sneakers in Amazon bags in the back.

Surveillance video shows a van approach, and after the door opened, someone got to work.

“The car just pulled right next to us and just started jamming the lock,” said Jacobo. “Five minutes later, everything was gone. Everything.”

Coral Gables police told Local 10 News they are investigating.

Jacobo, meanwhile, hopes someone recognizes the people responsible.

“When somebody does that, I feel like they’re in a dark place and they’re doing worse,” he said. “Hopefully nobody else has to deal with it.”
