MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — An alligator was spotted on the side of Florida’s Turnpike Friday morning in Miami-Dade County.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the gator was spotted laying on the emergency shoulder of the southbound lanes near the exit to Northwest 74th Street.
Two left lanes were blocked as Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers wrangled the gator.
Two officers then carried the gator away from the Turnpike and released it into a canal that runs parallel to the roadway.
According to the FWC, the gator was about 9 feet long.
After the alligator sighting, the FWC reminded the public about its Statewide Nuisance Alligator Program (SNAP).
“The goal of SNAP is to proactively address alligator threats in developed areas while conserving alligators in Florida,” the FWC said in an email to Local 10 News. “SNAP uses contracted nuisance alligator trappers throughout the state to remove alligators believed to pose a threat to people, pets or property.”
Those with concerns about an alligator should call the FWC’s toll-free Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 866-FWC-GATOR (866-392-4286).
