SOUTH MIAMI, Fla. — A Miami man is facing a felony charge after authorities said he threatened to shoot up a hospital because of a phone call that wasn’t transferred.
Courtney Matthew Harris, 38, of Coconut Grove, is accused of making the mass shooting threat to Baptist Health South Miami Hospital.
According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, Harris called the hospital, located at 6200 SW 73rd St., in an attempt to speak with his grandmother, a patient, at around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
An MDSO arrest report states Harris “became irate and upset” because the call wasn’t transferred and told a staff member, “I’m about (to) load up my rifle and come down there. I will load up my 80-round clip and wipe all of y’all from existence.”
The threat caused “fear” among hospital staff, deputies said.
Authorities said they were able to trace the call to Harris and they arrested him at his home in the 3500 block of Florida Avenue on Wednesday morning.
Deputies said he provided “a full confession” and arrested him on a charge of making a false report concerning the use of firearms in a violent manner.
As of Thursday, he was being held in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a $5,000 bond.
