MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A northwest Miami-Dade senior is facing two felony charges after authorities said he drunkenly ran over another man while driving a panel van in a gas station parking lot and then took off, leaving him dead.
According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened on Sunday afternoon at the Sunoco at 10260 NW Seventh Ave. in the county’s unincorporated Pinewood area.
Deputies said surveillance video showed Norberto Reyes, 73, “staggering towards and entering the driver’s side of his parked 2003 Ford Econoline” at around 3:30 p.m. as the victim, whose name wasn’t released, stood on the curb.
According to MDSO, the victim lost his balance and fell in front of the van.
An arrest report states that Reyes “began to drive forward, causing the passenger front tire to strike the right shoulder and back of the victim.”
After impact, “the victim fell with his upper body under the van between the front and rear tires,” deputies said, and Reyes “continued to drive forward until his rear tire struck the victim and was unable to continue forward due to the victim’s body being wedged under the rear tire.”
“(Reyes) turned his front wheels and accelerated until the rear tire slowly ran over the victim’s chest,” the MDSO report states. “(He) stopped his vehicle, exited the driver’s door and staggered towards the rear of his van while bracing himself against the driver’s side of the van to keep his balance.”
Authorities said Reyes got back in the van and left.
Deputies said they found Reyes’ van Monday near his home in the 9200 block of Northwest Fourth Avenue and found Reyes in his house.
They took him into custody on charges of DUI manslaughter and leaving the scene of a crash causing death. Authorities said he provided a confession that was redacted in his arrest report.
As of Tuesday, he was being held without bond in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
