MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — Miami Beach police investigated after they said a scooter rider died after hitting a vehicle Wednesday.
The wreck happened just before 10 a.m. at 11th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue.
Officer Christopher Bess, a Miami Beach Police Department spokesperson, said medics took the scooter rider to Jackson Memorial Hospital, “where he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.“
Police said the driver “remained on scene and is cooperating with investigators.“
“The preliminary investigation revealed that the E-scooter was traveling southbound on Pennsylvania Avenue and had a red light,” Bess said. “Unfortunately, he failed to stop and collided with the black sedan.
“This is a tragic reminder to our E-scooter users: please be mindful of other motorists that are on the road. Always wear your helmet, but most importantly, obey the traffic laws — because we have passed legislation where our officers can issue tickets to every micro-mobility user if they don’t obey the laws. And this is a tragic, tragic interview.”
MBPD’s traffic homicide detectives were still investigating the crash as of Wednesday afternoon, Bess said.
Authorities have not released the rider’s name.
Editor’s note: The original version of this story stated that “a driver struck and killed a scooter rider.” Police later clarified that the scooter rider ran a red light and hit the vehicle. The article has since been corrected.
