PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. — The Nielsen ratings are in and WPLG Local 10’s decision to part ways with ABC was clearly the right call.
The station, which celebrated its Independence Day from ABC on Monday, Aug. 4, scored a huge ratings success on day one.
WPLG programming beat ABC programming in nearly every time period throughout the day, including outpacing ABC’s Good Morning America and ABC’s prime and late-night programming.
“We are incredibly happy with the first day results,” said WPLG President and CEO Bert Medina.
“Obviously, we know it’s a marathon and not a sprint, but this is a tremendous start to what is the future of local television,” continued Medina.
“We have served this community for almost 70 years. We thank our loyal viewers for sticking with us through this change. This ratings story is even more impressive when you consider the shift in streaming services, and the fact many viewers found disruption in their service on this first day. We are continuing to work on resolving these obstacles and we expect even stronger ratings in the future,” Medina added.
“We are extremely proud of the new newscasts that have been added to our schedule. We now produce 93 hours of local news each week, including South Florida’s only 9 p.m. newscast. As we said when we announced our separation from ABC, we are committed to serving our community. We are investing in local news. We are employing people our viewers know and trust. This truly is the future of our industry and we are here to stay,” Medina concluded.
