Cold crash for Christmas
This season has been notably void of chilly air so far in South Florida, with the coldest reading for Miami coming in at just 63 back on October 19. November went down as the second warmest on record, and December has been on a similar trajectory. But all of that looks to change just in time for Christmas.

Disturbance expected to develop, threaten Central America this weekend
The disturbance we’ve been following in the Caribbean – dubbed Invest 91L – is taking a familiar track south along South America’s northern shoreline like other systems we’ve tracked this season, including the disturbance that became Bonnie back in June and more recently the tropical wave that later became Hurricane Ian.

So far this hurricane season, water temperatures across the main development region – commonly called the MDR, where the majority of Category 3, 4 and 5 hurricanes form later in the season – have been running above average, though not exceptionally so, through the first half of June.
Ongoing flooding across South Florida as Potential Tropical Cyclone One draws near

Michael Lowry on his future as Local 10′s Hurricane Specialist, Storm Surge Expert
Shortly upon deciding to leave The Weather Channel as its on-air Hurricane Specialist and Storm Surge Expert at the end of 2016, I received a phone call from Bill Pohovey, the long-time vice president and news director at WPLG – Miami’s local ABC affiliate. Having been a one-time resident of Miami, I knew the station letters well. I also knew its team of meteorologists, including Chief Certified Meteorologist Betty Davis, also a Weather Channel alum, and its resident Hurricane Specialist Max Mayfield, a colleague, friend, and former National Hurricane Center Director. I don’t remember the details of our conversation – it was brief – though I do remember the impression it left. This local station knew its niche – hurricanes – and it had a plan to not only cover them best, but to cover them better than the rest. The timing for me, though, didn’t quite fit.
