Daniel Alvarez, of Miami, who was detained after the July 17 crash, is now charged with vehicular homicide/reckless manner.

The crash was reported around 8:35 a.m. July 17 in the area of South Dixie Highway and Southwest 187th Street.

According to an arrest report from the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, Alvarez was behind the wheel of a 2020 BMW X3 that morning, traveling south on South Dixie Highway as the victim, Carlos Delahoz-Vega, 38, was walking in the outside lane, using a backpack leaf blower near the sidewalk.

Deputies said Delahoz-Vega was wearing a bright green shirt and the company’s landscaping truck was parked in the inside lane and left turn lane of the roadway.

But according to the arrest report, Alvarez was speeding when his SUV struck Delahoz-Vega.

Deputies said evidence at the scene shows Alvarez drove off the roadway, toward the sidewalk, before striking the victim, “vaulting him onto the hood and windshield before violently striking the pavement.”

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel responded to the scene, but a lieutenant pronounced Delahoz-Vega dead at 8:43 a.m.

According to the arrest report, Alvarez was later found sleeping in the parking lot of a nearby Rooms To Go.

Deputies said he had trouble standing on his own, “appeared sluggish and had low speech.”

According to the report, a drug evaluation was administered by a deputy and the results were “consistent with impairment attributable to a narcotic analgesic and the downside of a CNS (central nervous system) stimulant.”

Deputies said they found three yellow packets in Alvarez’s pocket labeled buprenorphine and naxloxone sublingual film. A syringe was also found in his vehicle, along with Narcan nasal spray, authorities said.

As of Thursday morning, Alvarez was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. Online jail records listed his bond as “to be set.”
