HOMESTEAD, Fla. — A teacher at a charter school in Homestead is facing a child abuse charge after police said she hurled a shoe at a student.
Homestead police said the incident happened on Feb. 28 at The Charter School at Waterstone, located at 855 Waterstone Way. Officers took the teacher, identified as Sandra Marta Colombo, into custody on Wednesday.
A student who witnessed the incident told police that Colombo, 61, was trying to throw the shoe at a student who was “misbehaving” and instead hit another student in the face, an arrest report states.
Another witness, who said Colombo threw the shoe to “get someone’s attention,” described the article of footwear as “like a sandal,” according to police.
“The victim attended a forensic interview and she disclosed that (Colombo) threw a shoe and hit her on her forehead,“ the report states. ”The victim stated that she did not have any marks or bruises from the incident. The victim stated that after the incident, (Colombo) said sorry and rubbed her forehead.”
Police said after taking Colombo into custody Wednesday, she invoked her right to an attorney.
After appearing in court, a judge allowed her to be released on her own recognizance, though she had now left the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center as of early Thursday afternoon, jail records show.
