MIAMI — A man died after an electric dirt bike struck him as he was riding a bicycle eastbound on the Rickenbacker Causeway on Friday in Miami, police said.

Police officers temporarily closed the eastbound lanes coming from Virginia Key toward the Brickell neighborhood and routed traffic to the causeway’s westbound lanes.

The crash and the temporary closure also affected westbound traffic from Brickell Avenue to Virginia Key and Key Biscayne, near the causeway’s toll gantry.

According to Officer Michael Vega, a spokesman for the Miami Police Department, the two who were riding the electric dirt bike when they struck the bicyclist were minors, and one suffered facial injuries.

Fire rescue personnel took the man and one of the minors from the Rickenbacker Causeway to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center. The man died at JMH, according to Vega.

The minor was treated for facial injuries, according to Vega. The cause of the crash was under investigation late Friday night.
