COOPER CITY, Fla. — The Broward Sheriff’s Office has released the name of a man shot and killed by one of the agency’s deputies outside of a McDonald’s in Cooper City on Saturday.
Officials with BSO said Boston Cassano, 18, had been in a “physical altercation with his mother” and shot himself at around noon.
When deputies responded to the restaurant, at 10260 Griffin Road, a BSO spokesperson said Cassano “attacked” the deputy, “forcing him” to open fire.
Authorities said medics arrived to aid Cassano, who lived in Cooper City, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Medics took the deputy, who hasn’t been publicly identified, and Cassano’s mother to a hospital with injuries unrelated to gunfire.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the deputy’s actions, as is standard procedure.
BSO officials said help is available for those in crisis by calling the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-8255.
