MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — A well-known South Florida businessman has passed away.
Stephen Muss, who played a huge role in the redevelopment and ultimate resurgence of Miami Beach, died Saturday night, Local 10 News has learned.
He was born in New York City and made his way down to South Florida in the 1950s after becoming very successful working in real estate on Long Island.
Among his accomplishments in Miami-Dade County, Muss rescued the famed Fontainbleau Hotel from bankruptcy in the late 1970s and invested around $100 million for improvements.
He also played a large role in the implementation of a 3% bed tax, which ultimately helped the city invest in its aging infrastructure.
Muss and his family long called Miami Beach their home and were prominent members of the local Jewish community.
