KEY WEST, Fla. — The Parrots and Margaritas 5K kicked off one of many events during the four-day “Just a Few Friends Festival,” honoring the life, legacy and music of Jimmy Buffett.

“It encompasses all kinds of events from this to a Margarita stroll to historic walks culminating with the second line on Sunday — second line being a traditional New Orleans funeral march,” organizer Kertis said. “I will follow back concert in our park.”

Paul, an attendee added, “And we’re not just an event just playing music. We’re getting tours, lectures. There’s something for everybody. We’re family friendly.”

Some participants hit the pavement in tennis shoes, others in flip-flops. In true Conch Republic fashion, there was no shortage of quirkiness — from parrot heads and pets to colorful get-ups — all with plenty of island vibes.

While some runners took the race seriously, others were clearly more interested in the margaritas.

The lighthearted spirit proved that when Key West’s favorite son is being celebrated, it really is “5 o’clock somewhere.”

“Why are you a Jimmy Buffett fan?” Local 10’s Jimmy Buffett asked a fan.

“Always with Jimmy Buffett. We travel through the islands and everybody knows them,” Noella said.

“My husband’s been a fan since the early 70s and he just loves him. And when he passed away, we mourned for two weeks, listening to his music and drinking margaritas every day.” said Debbie, another Jimmy Buffett fan.

“Jimmy Buffett has been a big part of Key West,” Arowynn said. “And every time I listen to his songs I always think of Key West, and it’s what made me fall in love with the place.”

“Jimmy sings about how we live,” said Kertis. “He’s singing about our lives, so when we hear it, he’s putting our experiences into words.”

“Jimmy Buffett: A Trip Around The Sun” is set to air on Local 10 News at 7 p.m. on Saturday, as Key West celebrates the legacy of the beloved singer, songwriter, author, actor, and businessman.
