NORTH MIAMI, Fla. — Two young children were found wandering barefoot near a roadway in North Miami this week, and their aunt is now facing a child neglect charge after police say she left them alone for at least two hours.
Officers with the North Miami Police Department said they responded Monday afternoon after receiving a call that the children had been spotted walking near a building with no shoes and cuts on their feet.
Authorities confirmed that the children’s aunt, 31-year-old Nirlouize Lizaire, was later arrested and booked into jail on a charge of child neglect. In her mugshot, she appeared teary-eyed.
In bond court Wednesday, Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy Glazer set her bond at just $1, drawing attention in the courtroom.
“Yes, a dollar,” Glazer said during the hearing.
Lizaire is also being held on an immigration detainer, according to jail records.
Glazer said that Lizaire claimed her 14-year-old son was supposed to supervise both of the children but fell asleep on the day of the incident.
Police say the children were not seriously hurt and were reunited with relatives.
Authorities said they are working to release body camera footage from the officers who found the children, but technical issues have delayed that process.
Lizaire remained at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center as of Thursday morning.
