Police shooting Liberty City remains under investigation

As officers were on their way, someone called 911 and reported that an armed man wearing all black was shooting in the area, outside an apartment building, police said.

“I heard a loud ‘bang, bang,’ a pause, and then I heard another ‘bang, bang,’” one witness told Local 10’s Trent Kelly.

According to authorities, officers arrived at the scene and confronted the man, resulting in one officer opening fire.

“What we know right now is there’s been one officer that discharged his firearm,” Miami Police Chief Manny Morales said. “We do know that we have a male that’s been struck by gunfire.”

Police said the armed man was shot multiple times.

Miami Fire Rescue personnel transported the man to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center where he was listed in critical condition.

His mother, Cynthia Williams, identified him to Local 10 News as 37-year-old Joseph Tilley.

Williams said her son was shot in the head.

“He had a gun and they were trying to tell him to put the gun down, and there was a confrontation and he got shot. That’s all I know,” she said. “I can barely even hold it together, because I just lost my husband and I’m going through a lot of problems, and then this.”

Police confirmed a gun was recovered at the scene.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the police shooting, per standard protocol.
