MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — Bold, brazen, and deliberate.
That’s how a northwest Miami-Dade man is describing the burglar who swiped $700 in cash from his car.
The crook’s stealthy moves were captured on home surveillance video in the Westview by Lennar townhouse community off Northwest 24th Avenue and 119th Street.
A hooded thief is spotted entering vehicles, prowling the neighborhood, and swiping cash, credit cards and documents with sensitive identification information.
“I saw a guy at 4 a.m. inside of my car take all that stuff — money, my documentation, my wallet,“ victim Lucas Jacques said. “It was terrible because I was not expecting this. We are living in a community that’s guarded and secure, there’s a gate.”
Two weeks later, questions are still mounting about the case. Jacques remembers waking up to the nightmare, discovering his wallet was missing, and then watching the video of the thief breaking into his car.
Along with the $700 in cash, half a dozen credit cards and his driver’s license were also stolen.
“It’s a huge community, there’s a lot of homes around this, 700 homes, and another neighbor complained about the same situation before,” Jacques said. “It’s not safe because I have three kids and my privacy was compromised and it’s sad.”
Jacques said the burglar wasted no time, using his credit cards repeatedly at a Home Depot in Hialeah and a restaurant nearby.
Jacques moved to the Miami area eight months ago and calls this a hard lesson to stay vigilant.
“Now, I need to take responsibility for leaving my money there, but it’s my car, it’s my home and it shouldn’t happen,” he said.
Jacques admits his family was rushing to get inside the house the day before and forgot to lock the car door.
He said his situation serves as a cautionary tale and a reminder to lock your doors and take anything of value inside.
