MIAMI — There was emotional testimony in a South Florida courtroom on Wednesday as a woman stands trial for fraud.
Testifying was Yospa Abin, the daughter of the victim, Zoraida Economopoulos.
Police say Ana Maria Nunez, 68, of southwest Miami-Dade, stole from Economopoulos, a fraud the state says was worth nearly half a million dollars.
Nunez allegedly befriended Economopoulos, 78, of Doral, just months before she would die from cancer.
The state says Nunez posed as the victim’s daughter to obtain power of attorney and transferred money and ownership of the victim’s home to herself.
On the stand, Abin described a day when the alarm went off at her late mother’s house, and when the alarm company called, she went over and was shocked by what she found.
“When I tried opening the door, the locks were changed,” she said. “I tried to open the mailbox and the locks were changed.”
The state also says Nunez forged the victim’s signature on documents, showing evidence of what her signature looked like on a trust, versus her will, where her name is misspelled.
Nunez’s son is also facing charges in connection to the case. His trial is set for November.
