Kirk was the founder of Turning Point USA, which promotes conservative values and advocates for conservative politics on school campuses.

The grassroots organization was started by Kirk when he was 18. Now there are more than 850 college campus chapters, including one at FIU.

Isabelle Garcia is on the board, and says she is devastated over Kirk’s murder.

“He had a big influence on my life personally, and who I am today,” she said.

Kirk was known for his open mic events at universities across the country.

He was on tour when he was shot and killed Wednesday at Utah Valley University.

“Honestly, at the end of the day, whether you like him or whether you don’t like him, he’s a human being,” said Garcia.

Kirk never visited FIU but the organization said they had enough interest and had planned to invite him in the near future.
