LAUDERDALE-BY-THE-SEA, Fla. — The debate about adding President Donald J. Trump’s name to a Lauderdale-by-the-Sea street went deep into the night.
It was standing room only, including an overflow room, for residents on Wednesday, many of whom many opposed the idea of adding Trump’s name to the street sign for Sea Grape Drive.
“It will change the feeling in the community, as many people have spoken out,” said Resident Missy Miller. “It appears that they didn’t even bother to check with the residents who live on Sea Grape Drive. I think it will be very detrimental to the community. My question is, why invite this problem?”
Town Commissioner Richard DeNapoli is who introduced the resolution and proposal.
He wasn’t by himself in believing Trump’s name should be added to the street marker, as Broward County’s Republican Party President Chris Marino came to voice his support on the matter.
He says the party’s executive committee’s headquarters is in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, and that’s one of the reasons why he wants to see the add on.
Others who think differently say they weren’t notified of the street sign proposal, and that the community should be voting on it.
They don’t want to change their hometown, which has for decades been a nonpartisan place, where they live by the motto, “Relax, you’re here.”
DeNapoli defended his choice introduce the idea, saying it has nothing to do with politics.
Ultimately, commissioners voted 3-to-2 in favor of adding Trump’s name to the street sign.
After the vote, some residents said they’ll let the next election do the talking for them.
“I think the commissioners won’t be commissioners for very much longer,” said Miller.
