PARKLAND, Fla. — Recognizing the military’s service and sacrifice, a Parkland teen has gathered more than 2,000 letters that will soon go out to U.S. troops, thanking them for serving the country.
For Jade Capella, it’s about letting service members know their work is not forgotten.
“You’re showing us strength that inspires me and I hope this letter gives you even just a small reminder you are not alone and your work matters deeply,” one of the letters reads.
Capella, a senior at American Heritage High School in Plantation, collected the letters at her school. She also gathered 400 drawings from children at her nearby church.
Working with the nonprofit Operation Gratitude, all of the letters and drawings will be placed inside care packages and sent to service members around the world.
Capella said her grandfather, who served in the Army during World War II and was awarded a Purple Heart, inspired her efforts.
He died when she was young, but his service left a lasting impression.
“It shouldn’t be just Veterans Day. It should be every day,” Capella said. “So I hope when they see these letters, we’re constantly thinking of them every day.”
The letters are expected to be sent to troops around the world over the next few months.
