Hollywood Hills surges to big halftime lead over Sunset in early kickoff

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — Friday night football came early at Hollywood Hills High School, and for once, the weather cooperated.

After weeks of rain, the Spartans kicked off under clear blue skies in a 4 p.m. matchup against Sunset High.

Both teams struggled to open the season — Sunset entered winless at 0-3, with just six points scored all year, while Hollywood Hills started 0-2 before bouncing back with a victory last week.

The game began as a defensive battle, with neither side able to move past midfield through the first quarter and much of the second.

But Hollywood Hills finally broke through when running back Carl Judy found the edge and scored the game’s opening touchdown.

From there, the Spartans took control, piling on 28 unanswered points before halftime. Hollywood Hills led 35-0 at the break.

The early start time was unusual, but necessary.

The school’s stadium does not have lights, making afternoon kickoffs the only option unless games are moved elsewhere. The school’s athletic director said he wants his players to have the same opportunities as other programs, but until then, games like Friday’s remain a challenge for families and fans trying to attend.

The Spartans’ marching band entertained the home crowd as Hollywood Hills looked to carry its momentum through the second half.
