Nationwide officials tour Broward’s election headquarters

Election officials get tour of Broward facility

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — On Monday, election officials from across the nation got to see Broward County’s state-of-the-art election headquarters.

More than 200 election administrators came to Fort Lauderdale for the “Partnership for Large Election Jurisdictions Conference.”

They toured Broward County’s new election headquarters — a facility that opened in 2024.

“Those areas where we do the ballot processing are surrounded by a hallway that we call the ‘transparency corridor’ — with big windows so that all the different rooms the public is able to see in without being able to enter," Broward Supervisor of Elections Joe Scott said.

The building features modern technology, strict security protocols and glass viewing areas designed to let anyone watch the process firsthand.

Broward’s election history hasn’t been without challenges. The county once drew national attention for flawed ballots and long lines when elections were run out of a much smaller site inside the Lauderhill Mall.

“Part of what went into the decision about this design was more or less the conditions that we faced in 2018 and the way that there were protests happening in the parking lot, it was difficult for our workers to come in to the building,” Scott said.

Election officials call the new facility a fresh start and visitors from other states, including Georgia, say the design stands out.

“I think just the openness and the ability to see all the different processes throughout the cycle of a ballot is really important in today’s election system,” Zach Manifold, the elections supervisor in Gwinnett County, Georgia, outside of Atlanta, said.

The tour was designed to show other states how Broward’s election facility could serve as a model across the country.

Monday’s visit was part of a three-day conference on making elections more secure and transparent.
