Violet Edwards mark her 100th birthday in Parkland

PARKLAND, Fla. — Violet Edwards, who graduated from college at 96 years old, was celebrating her 100th birthday with a party on Saturday night in Broward County.

“I am very happy,” said Edwards, who wore a ruby red dress.

The Jamaican Consulate General and Parkland Mayor Rich Walker honored her with proclamations.

“She always taught me that you can do anything and be anything that you want, which shows me what she did at 96. She’s my role model,” Dr. Christine Edwards, her daughter, said. “She’s warm, she’s loving, she’s always, always, always cheerful. Every time you’re down, she’s always positive. She’s my best friend.”

There was a lot to celebrate. Her family created a scholarship fund in her honor, and already six students have benefited from it. In lieu of gifts, the centenarian’s guests donated to the scholarship fund.

“When you have such a remarkable person to care for, it’s very easy to get so many people together,” Everett Smith, Edward’s son-in-law, said. “As a matter of fact, every person who was invited came.”
