FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Broward County prosecutors have dropped the criminal case against former Miami Hurricanes star linebacker Micheal Barrow.
Sheriff’s deputies arrested Barrow, 55, of Charlotte, North Carolina, at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport after accusing him of accidentally striking his wife during a family dispute on Sept. 1.
He had faced three domestic battery charges.
In a closeout memorandum, prosecutors laid out their reasons for dropping the case:
“This incident was captured on the airport video surveillance and clearly shows the defendant first punch his wife, then his 16 year old son, then punching the 21 year old after he jumps into the fight. By all accounts, the defendant never intended to strike his wife. However, it is clear that the defendant intended to strike his 16 year old son. Under the theory of transferred intent, a battery charge is warranted for striking his wife, if the defendant intended to strike his son but struck her instead. Next, the State looked at whether the defendant had the legal right to strike his son as a form of discipline.”
“The victims remain uncooperative with the prosecution of this case and reside out of state. There were no independent witnesses who could identify any of the victims either. In light of the case law in this area and for the reasons set forth above, there is no reasonable likelihood of conviction as to any of the charges and this case is being declined.”
Barrow, who attended and played football at Homestead High School, played for the Hurricanes from 1989 to 1992 and went on to have a career in the NFL as a player and coach.
