CORAL GABLES, Fla. — The South Florida theater community honored Dr. Lawrence and Barbara Stein Saturday night for nearly four decades of leadership at the Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre.
The couple, who founded the professional theater company in 1988, were celebrated by alumni, including Broadway actors Stephen Christopher Anthony and Janet Dacal.
“Personally, absolutely life-changing. I wouldn’t have done anything in my life,” Anthony said. “I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for the organization. This is where I discovered my love for my life’s work.”
“It’s changed my life,” Dacal said. “I know it’s changed countless lives for so many local actors in the area.”
The Steins are credited with saving the historic Miracle Theatre from demolition and building a cultural institution that has launched countless careers.
“It was spontaneous — but with real heart and purpose,” Barbara Stein said.
Proceeds from the gala will fund the installation of 600 new seats in the main stage theater.
