FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A dog is safe after firefighters rescued her from a smoke-filled apartment during a fire in Fort Lauderdale Wednesday morning.
According to Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue, crews were called around 9:50 a.m. to a multi-unit apartment building near the 1100 block of Northwest Fifth Court after receiving a 911 call reporting smoke and flames.
Firefighters arrived within five minutes to find smoke coming from the eaves of the building.
Authorities said smoke from the blaze spread to neighboring units, where firefighters discovered a dog trapped inside a crate.
Firefighters quickly removed the animal and administered oxygen. Officials said the dog is doing well.
A FLFR spokesperson said no one was inside the unit where the fire started, nor in the unit where the dog was found. A resident in another nearby unit was woken up by the fire and evacuated safely.
The flames were extinguished within about 10 minutes. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
