POMPANO BEACH, Fla. — Pompano Beach is reconsidering its decades-long partnership with the Broward Sheriff’s Office as the cost of police services continues to rise.
The city paid BSO $53 million in 2022, with costs projected to climb to $63 million by 2025. While the contract has been extended through September 2026, city commissioners are exploring other options — including bringing back a city-run police department.
A community meeting on Saturday aimed to gather public input, but turnout was low.
“If we’re going to make a decision based on information from 10 people, it’s very disappointing,” said former state Rep. Patricia Williams, a local resident.
Those who did attend voiced concerns about BSO’s leadership and lack of connection with the community.
“I think we need community policing, and the sheriff just doesn’t understand our community anymore,” said Vicente Thrower.
“My issue isn’t with the officers, it’s with the leadership,” added Jocelyn Jackson. “It’s time for Gregory Tony to pass the baton.”
Two virtual meetings are scheduled for Monday and Wednesday at 6 p.m. Other cities, including Deerfield Beach and West Park, are also considering a split from BSO.
