‘We will never forget’: community rallies to support Parkland 17 Memorial

PARKLAND, Fla. — Pasquale’s Pizza on Coral Ridge Drive in Coral Springs hopes to be busy Wednesday night.

The staff is ready to make fresh pizzas, and on Wednesday and Thursday only, 20% of all sales will go directly to the Parkland 17 Memorial Foundation.

“I have a senior in high school, a daughter who goes to Douglas, so I can only imagine. My heart goes out to all the families,” said owner Mike Marrone.

Marrone said customers must remember to mention they are supporting the fundraiser, whether they dine in or take out.

“It’s just bringing the community together to remember and to celebrate the lives of the 17 — and to give back to the memorial fund,” Marrone said.

Broward County School Board member Lori Alhadeff is also holding this cause close to her heart.

“My daughter Alyssa was one of the victims that day, but (the memorial) is a place where people can go to reflect, remember the 17 lives lost that day, and also find some peace and healing for our families,” she said.

Another community event taking place is the Parkland Pumpkin Patch, organized by the city of Parkland.

Mayor Rich Walker said the event’s beneficiary this year is the Parkland 17 Memorial Foundation.

“To make sure we are letting our community know that we haven’t forgotten — and we will never forget — and when we build this memorial, we will ensure their memories are here forever,” he said.

Tony Montalto said this is where he hopes to honor his daughter, Gina Montalto, who was one of the 17 lives lost in the Feb. 14, 2018, shooting.

“We hope they remember the preciousness of life and realize they were part of this community, part of families, and sadly tragedies like this can happen anywhere, so it’s up to all of us to come together,” he said.
