Broward law firm report named I-95 Florida’s deadliest highway

DAVIE, Fla. — A new analysis from a South Florida law firm highlights some of the deadliest stretches of road in the state — and one major highway stands out above the rest.

Rosen Injury Law, based in Broward County, commissioned a data company to identify where the most fatal crashes occurred in Florida between 2019 and 2023. Attorney Eric Rosen said the goal was to help raise awareness about dangerous driving corridors.

“I think having this data out there, especially about some of the dangerous roadways in Florida, could help people be hypervigilant when they’re on the highways or driving,” Rosen said.

According to the firm’s findings, Interstate 95 topped the list with 51 fatal crashes along a stretch that runs from Hollywood Boulevard in Broward County to Northeast 125th Street in Miami-Dade County. Another section of I-95, from West Oakland Park Boulevard north to Taft Street, recorded 40 deadly crashes — ranking second among the state’s most hazardous areas.

“The common thread here is I-95,” Rosen said. “In these dense population areas, it tends to be extremely dangerous.”

Mark Friedlander, spokesperson for the Insurance Information Institute in Florida, said the data confirms what many already know about driving conditions in South Florida.

“There are high accident rates in South Florida. We know there are high fatality rates in South Florida,” Friedlander said. “This validates that, but when you look at the overall picture of driving here, there are hazards all over the area.”

Friedlander added that the location of fatal crashes does not directly affect auto insurance rates for drivers in those areas.

“We’re not aware of any insurance company that’s penalizing drivers based on crash history along a specific stretch of road,” he said. “It doesn’t get that precise.”

Rosen emphasized that drivers should focus on maintaining robust insurance coverage, especially uninsured motorist protection.

“All those drivers that have minimal insurance — if they crash into you, you’re not going to be able to make a strong claim and recover compensation for your injuries,” Rosen said. “But if you have uninsured motorist coverage, it’s going to cover you as if that driver did.”

Rosen said he hopes the findings serve as a reminder for drivers to stay alert — and better protected — on Florida’s highways.
