FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — The parents of Parkland shooting victim Joaquin Oliver have launched a new campaign honoring young people killed by gun violence.
Patricia and Manuel Oliver introduced “30 Under 30,” a digital magazine that highlights 30 victims whose lives were cut short, sharing their stories and potential futures.
“I think it’s a good way to remember them, to give them life,” Patricia Oliver said.
The campaign comes days after a Broward County judge ruled Florida’s ban on adults under 21 carrying concealed weapons unconstitutional — a decision that alarmed gun safety advocates.
Among the victims featured is Tim Schmidt Jr., a University of Central Florida student from Weston, killed in a 2023 Halloween mass shooting in Orlando. His father said the project reminds people of the promise these young lives held.
“We celebrate people doing great things,” Tim Schmidt said. “But we don’t always honor those who could have done great things.”
Patricia Oliver said she plans to continue the project each year until, in her words, “there’s real change.”
