MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — Body camera video obtained exclusively by Local 10 News shows the terrifying moments when Miami-Dade deputies came under fire in a deadly shootout while responding to reports of a squatter at a southwest Miami-Dade home last year.
The video captures a barrage of bullets moments after deputies ordered the suspect to drop his weapon.
Investigators said three responding deputies were injured in the gunfire exchange. Those injuries included gunshot wounds to the face, neck, arm, hand and leg.
“Drop the gun! I’m hit!” an officer was heard shouting at the scene.
The shooting happened on Jan. 17, 2024 in the 22000 block of Southwest 162nd Avenue after the property owner called police about a possible armed squatter inside the home.
Investigators say the gunman, 52-year-old Christopher Bailey, opened fire on officers as they approached the front door. Officers returned fire, killing Bailey at the scene.
All three deputies survived. Two were hospitalized at Jackson South Medical Center and later listed in stable condition.
Authorities said a 35-year-old officer wounded in the arm has been with the department for seven years.
A 57-year-old officer shot in the face and arm has served for 15 years, and a 40-year-old female officer injured in the leg had been with the department for 11 months at the time.
Property owner Douglas Alan Beard told Local 10 News last year that he had reported the squatters days earlier and believed Bailey and several others had moved into the vacant home less than a week before the shooting.
“They were organized in how they took over the place,” Beard said at the time.
No other arrest were announced.
