BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. — Two parents from Broward County were arrested Wednesday after deputies said two of their babies suffered serious injuries while in their care.
Kourtney Denshel Walton, 37, of Pompano Beach, and Andrew Wilson, 37, of Fort Lauderdale, each face one count of child neglect with great bodily harm, according to jail records obtained by Local 10 on Friday.
The investigation began on Dec. 19, 2024, after deputies responded to reports of child abuse at a home in an area that was redacted in their arrest reports. Authorities said 1-year-old Andrew Wilson sustained multiple fractures.
A Department of Children and Families investigator told deputies they went to Broward Health Medical Center to form a safety plan for the boy, who was living with Walton and his grandmother at the time.
The grandmother said she had moved into Walton’s home when her grandson was born; Walton is her biological daughter.
Deputies said they returned to the hospital on Dec. 20, 2024, after the boy’s doctor noticed swelling on his left leg during a routine vaccination. A skeletal survey revealed fractures to his right collarbone, tibia, forearm and left femur.
Doctors determined the injuries were consistent with “non-accidental blunt force trauma” and said the severity of the injuries meant the boy would not have been in normal health after they occurred, according to the report.
Walton and Wilson told investigators they first noticed the boy’s leg swelling on Dec. 11, 2024, but delayed seeking medical attention because they had a doctor’s appointment scheduled for the following day, the report stated.
Authorities said that Walton first noticed the soreness during a family trip. Both denied causing harm or observing anyone else hurt the boy.
On Jan. 2, the boy was placed in his grandmother’s care and removed from his parents. Investigators said repeated attempts to contact Walton and Wilson from January through September were unsuccessful.
Authorities said the couple welcomed a second son on June 23.
They said that infant was also removed from their care and placed with his older brother under kinship care with the maternal grandmother after being brought to Broward Health Medical Center with excessive fussiness and difficulty moving his left arm.
Detectives said initial examinations determined the baby had sustained a traumatic brain injury and a skull fracture.
Walton told investigators she picked up the baby from daycare while he was agitated and in pain. She and Wilson again denied harming the child or allowing anyone else to do so, according to the report.
Both parents were taken into custody on Wednesday, records show.
As of Friday afternoon, Wilson was being held on a $250,000 bond at the Paul Rein Detention Facility, while Walton was held on the same bond at BSO’s North Broward Bureau detention center.
