After 13 years on run, man wanted for wife’s Miami Gardens murder captured in San Diego

Man wanted for killing wife in Miami Gardens busted in San Diego 13 years later

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — More than 13 years ago, police say a man from Miami Gardens shot and killed his wife during a gathering.

That man, 41-year-old Ramone O’Neil Clayton, took off after the shooting and now, after more than a decade, he’s been found all the way in San Diego.

O’Neil Clayton attended that gathering with his wife, Stephanie Ulette Clayton, 35, in September 2012.

Miami Gardens Police Chief Delma Noel-Pratt said O’Neil Clayton and his wife started fighting about something and it turned physical, with O’Neil Clayton pushing his wife to the ground and fatally shooting her.

Several witnesses who were at the gathering identified O’Neil Clayton as the shooter who killed his wife.

After the murder, police said he fled the scene in a car and a warrant was issued for second-degree murder.

For years, detectives and U.S. Marshals worked to track O’Neil Clayton down, but they were not successful.

Then, on Oct. 24, detectives with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office received a tip that O’Neil Clayton was living in San Diego, doing handyman jobs, and using a fake Jamaican ID to stay undercover.

Three days later, he was arrested.

Now family members are reacting to the arrest, glad to finally be receiving justice after more than a decade.

“It’s not easy, it’s like all over again,” said Karlene Braidy, sister of the victim. “She was always the life of everything, the life of the family. She walked in a place and you can’t help but love her.”

Miami Gardens police are asking anyone with additional information about the case to contact them, or Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers, at 305-471-TIPS.
