If we were to look at the world through a child’s eyes, we would endeavor to make it the best place it can be.
That’s exactly what Joshua Williams did.
Before he had his two front teeth and started kindergarten, a then 4-year-old Williams founded a hunger relief organization called Joshua’s Heart Foundation that continues helping people to this day.
Now, 20 years later, Williams is all grown up but still holding the same goals.
“We try to help people who are low income and we’re trying to stomp out world hunger,” he said.
He’s now received a college degree in finance and has big plans to take his nonprofit to the next level.
“What I am looking to do next is really turning the foundation into a fully, youth-led organization where we are able to expand it into different counties in the U.S.,” Williams said.
Until then, Williams and a core group of volunteers are focused on helping the hungry right here in South Florida.
“We’re seeing anywhere from 150 to 200 families that we feed on a weekly basis,” he said.
Thalia Castro is a Joshua’s Heart national advisory board member. Her connection to the organization dates back to the time she was just 8 years old.
“Working with Joshua’s Heart Foundation and volunteering through the years definitely made me more aware of the problem of hunger and poverty in our communities,” said Castro.
Since 2005, Joshua’s Heart has distributed more than seven million pounds of food and helped more than 700,000 people.
That’s an average of 35,000 individuals each year.
And like all our other day of giving hunger relief organizations, Joshua’s Heart is stretching its limited funding to meet the surge in demand.
On Friday, for Local 10’s annual Day of Giving, you too can support the vision that began in a little boy’s heart and has flourished into a life-changing mission.
“It’s somewhat of a unique life so far and I have been blessed to live it,” said Williams.
Local 10’s Christian De La Rosa and Michalia Hightower will join Joshua’s Heart Foundation on Friday at the Publix supermarket, located at 9105 South Dadeland Boulevard in Kendall, from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m.
