PLANTATION, Fla. — A registered sex offender with a 2019 federal conviction for possessing child sexual abuse material is in trouble again; this time, he’s accused of an act of video voyeurism at the Broward Mall in Plantation.

Plantation police arrested David Paul Rohrig, 46, of Fort Lauderdale, on a digital voyeurism charge on Friday. The incident, they said, happened on Oct. 22.

According to investigators, a 17-year-old boy was urinating in a bathroom stall in the food court area of the mall, located at 8000 W. Broward Blvd., when he saw an arm poking under the stall, from a neighboring stall, with its camera pointed towards him.

An arrest report states that the boy saw the phone again as he was washing his hands and tried to grab it, then left the stall, told Rohrig to exit, and “afraid and in shock,” confronted him about what happened.

Police said Rohrig told the boy that he didn’t have anything on the phone, showed him the phone and told the boy he was not “taking any f---ing pictures of you.”

Authorities said the boy told Rohrig he was a minor and again asked why he was taking photos or videos of him, but Rohrig exited the bathroom and left the mall before the boy could get his license plate number.

According to the arrest report, the boy picked Rohrig out of a photo lineup on Oct. 31.

A federal probation officer called Plantation police after being alerted that officers ran Rohrig’s name through its teletype system, the report states. The probation officer used a program that gives him access to Rohrig’s phone to email police a screenshot of an image showing the Broward Mall bathroom floor, police said.

As of Monday, Rohrig was being held in the Broward Sheriff’s Office Paul Rein Detention Facility in Pompano Beach. His bond was listed at $50,000 and the report states he’s also facing a federal probation violation.
